  • Uncle Calvin's Coffee House

9555 N. Central Expressway Northeast Dallas

    214-363-0044

Nothing says good times quite like live acoustic music in a smoke-and-alcohol-free environment that"s named after Protestant reformer John Calvin and happens to be located in a church (Northpark Presbyterian Church, specifically). But if you swing that way, get ready to punch your ticket.

  • Buttons Jazz Cafe

209 E. Pleasant Run Rd., De Soto Duncanville/DeSoto

    972-223-5800

The trays on the waitresses’ arms at Buttons Jazz Café in Desoto are filled with neon blue and red cocktails as they pass through a crowd of well-dressed patrons on a Thursday night. While the dinner rush has come and gone, there are still food orders being placed in front of patrons, but everyone is there for one reason. A popular jazz band performs on the high stage that sits on the back wall directly behind the bar. And though the place is set up like a proper chain restaurant (there are other Buttons locations in Fort Worth and Addison), it doesn’t stop people from scooting the tables out of the way so they can cut a rug.
  • Café Brazil

    3190 S. Central Expressway, #530, Mc Kinney Allen/McKinney

    972-984-1259

The original Café Brazil Lakewood location may be lost to history, but its colonies, with eclectic interior designs and attentive staff, live on throughout DFW. There's even a restaurant all the way out in McKinney! It is a well-loved and critically acclaimed local chain that specializes in hearty, inexpensive breakfasts, gourmet roasted coffee from a self-serve station and a smattering of Mexican and Southern-inspired dishes. The chorizo quesadilla, honey-chipotle fish tacos, chicken-fried steak and barbecue salmon are just some of the signature entrées. But it's with breakfast and coffee that Café Brazil really shines. Take, for example, the mammoth Brazilian Breakfast special, the vegetarian migas and house-made crepes. If the self-serve coffee strikes your fancy, there are more than 30 coffees available by the pound for a bit of Café Brazil at home.

  • Coffee Co.

6038 La Vista Dr. East Dallas & Lakewood

    214-887-8688

What Coffee Co. lacks in frappuccinos, fancy espresso machines, free Wi-Fi and cushy armchairs for hanging out, it makes up for with longevity -- they’ve been been roasting their own beans since 1971 -- and really great coffee, including an extra-potent “Motor Oil” variety that will surely get your motor revving. Early risers will have to look elsewhere for their fix, though: Coffee Co. doesn’t get brewing until 10 a.m.

  • Company Cafe

    3136 Routh St. Uptown/Oak Lawn

    469-458-8721

The second location of the Company Cafe builds on the first location’s foundation of gluten-free, seasonal and organic cooking. The kitchen has a way of making healthy cooking less of a drag and even the Southern soulful dishes don’t eat like lead. Chicken-fried steak, chicken and waffles, and cheese fries are made with a lot of thought instead of a lot of fat, and when the kitchen is firing on all cylinders, these dishes work. Burgers are good too. Grass-fed beef is served on a gluten-free bun if you like. Company Cafe’s strongest suit may be breakfast, when the coffee is endless the crowds are minuscule. Grab a paper and enjoy the sizeable patio during the week at your own risk. The French toast could easily make you late for work.

  • Houndstooth Coffee

1900 N. Henderson Ave. East Dallas & Lakewood

    972-863-9080

If you’re the type of bike-riding coffee snob who turns up his nose at frappuccinos, Austin import Houndstooth Coffee’s Henderson Avenue outpost might just fit the bill. Inside the sleek, modern, sun-drenched space, options abound: Japanese-style cold brew? Pourover? Cortado? Iced chai? Or perhaps an almond milk vanilla latte complete with heart-shaped latte art, courtesy of the impeccably trained, impossibly well-mannered and delightfully chatty baristas. The seating situation isn’t especially comfortable and you won’t find much in the way of food, but the the shiny La Marzocco machine churns out some of the best damn espresso you’ll ever taste, particularly when the beans hail from Tweed, Houndstooth’s sister roastery located in the Design District.

Located in historic downtown Denton, the Hydrant Cafe lives a double life. • Mudsmith Coffee

2114 Greenville Ave. East Dallas & Lakewood

Mudsmith Coffee, located on lower Greenville in the space squished between World Beer Co. and the Single Wide, is larger than nearly every independent coffee shop in town. Enormous vaulted ceilings shoot out from wood paneled walls, adorned with various stuffed animals. A massive bar, located in the center of the shop, boasts two La Marzocco espresso machines (one in mint green, the other sky blue), a selection of pastries, and beer and kombucha on tap. Mudsmith serves Fourbarrel Coffee, based out of San Francisco, and according to one of the shop's many Urban Outfitters-clad baristas, they also be serve wine (they have four bottles to choose from; two red and two white), sandwiches and kombucha mimosas.

  • Oak Lawn Coffee

2720 Oak Lawn Ave. Uptown/Oak Lawn

    469-340-0162

Formerly Urban Dog Coffee, this Oak Lawn hipster hangout claims to have the city’s best iced coffee, and we’re inclined to believe them. It’s rich, well-balanced and packs plenty of caffeinated punch. Beans are sourced locally from Oak Cliff Coffee Roasters, and a percentage of the proceeds is donated to local nonprofits, so you can feel good about ordering that extra-large latte. Killer strawberry muffins and fast Wi-Fi don’t hurt, either.

  • Opening Bell Coffee

1409 Botham Jean Blvd. Oak Cliff/South Dallas

    214-565-0383

Good tunes and bangin’ cups of joe are a given at Opening Bell Coffee. With one of the longest-running open mic nights in DFW, the shop’s stage has seen the likes of Leon Bridges, Charley Crockett and many who have gone on to compete on NBC's The Voice and American Idol. Patrons who attend the shop's open mic will often catch an early glimpse of the next big thing in the local music scene. Whether it’s during an open mic or a show featuring a national touring act, you can sit back and soak in the music while getting cracked out on something off their Java menu. Depending on what you plan to order, you might consider bringing a pair of boxing gloves too. Consisting of a 16-ounce drip coffee mixed with two shots of espresso just for fun, Opening Bell’s Black Eye packs a punch that might knock you on your feet. If you’re not down for coffee, you can always grab a beer or a glass of wine and order something tasty off the food menu, like a sandwich, soup or salad.

  • Paciugo

32 Highland Park Village Park Cities

    214-219-6161

Italians’ answer to Baskin-Robbins, Paciugo’s got waaaay more than 31 flavors. This is gelato, not ice cream; that means it’s made with milk instead of cream, which means that flavors aren’t dulled by a massive dose of milk fat, and served at a slightly warmer temperature, which means it’s ultra creamy. It also has 70 percent less fat than typical ice cream. Try up to three flavors in your cup or cone, from crowd pleasers like stracciatella (that’s a fancy way of saying chocolate chip), pistachio, and Mediterranean sea-salt caramel to more intriguing flavors like bubblegum, rose and beer sorbet. There’s also at least one soy-based flavor on offer every day, for you poor lactose-intolerant folk.
