10720 Preston Rd., Ste 1006 North Dallas

    214-987-0505

Self-serve yogurt shops have escaped the corridors of suburban malls. This Preston-Royal cool spot is one such place. Here, there are 16 flavors, ranging from the tried and true (old-fashioned vanilla) to the gaining in popularity (New York cheesecake). Also available are 24 toppings options including the fresh and healthy (mango), the nostalgic (gummy bears) and the downright junky (Reese's peanut butter cups). Then there are the smoothies, like the orange Detox and strawberry Energize, all made from certified organic fruit and non-fat frozen yogurt. It's understandable if you are a little overwhelmed by the choices at I Heart Yogurt, but options are good to have when it comes to frozen yogurt.

  • Paciugo

32 Highland Park Village Park Cities

    214-219-6161

Italians’ answer to Baskin-Robbins, Paciugo’s got waaaay more than 31 flavors. This is gelato, not ice cream; that means it’s made with milk instead of cream, which means that flavors aren’t dulled by a massive dose of milk fat, and served at a slightly warmer temperature, which means it’s ultra creamy. It also has 70 percent less fat than typical ice cream. Try up to three flavors in your cup or cone, from crowd pleasers like stracciatella (that’s a fancy way of saying chocolate chip), pistachio, and Mediterranean sea-salt caramel to more intriguing flavors like bubblegum, rose and beer sorbet. There’s also at least one soy-based flavor on offer every day, for you poor lactose-intolerant folk.

  • Yogilicious

    3000 Blackburn St. Uptown/Oak Lawn

    214-521-7888

This fro-yo purveyor just might have the heft to support its claims as an "oasis," and a "frozen yogurt dessert lounge." Sleek and contemporary in design, Yogilicious offers customers what seems like an endless array of flavor combinations. Coconut is among the most popular and when topped with fresh tropical fruit, like chunks of pineapple, could be an excellent remedy to the Dallas summer swelter. Other cool-down tastes include traditional vanilla, chocolate and the usual fruits, such as strawberry and boysenberry, as well as more exotic selections like guava, longan and pomegranate. The shop also offers seasonal flavors, including holiday specials such as eggnog, pumpkin spice and peppermint stick. Contrary to what the name might imply, you won't find a meditating ascetic, but devout regulars do claim to have found yogurt nirvana in Uptown.

  • Yogurtland

    2625 Old Denton Road #316 Carrollton/Farmers Branch

    214-483-3553

Yogurtland, as its name implies, is pretty much Candyland for frozen-yogurt lovers. It's clean, bright and modern, with a bank of self-serve frozen-yogurt machines on one wall. Flavors range from the expected (chocolate, vanilla, plain tart) to the inventive (red velvet, salted caramel pecan) to the downright outlandish (taro, dragon passion tart). Grab a cup and swirl in your flavor(s) of choice, then make your way over to the toppings bar and get to work. Go healthy with fresh berries, pomegranate seeds, bananas and myriad other fresh fruits, or do your best to induce a diabetic coma by loading on the sprinkles, gummi bears, chocolate chips, cookie dough and brownie bites. The good news is the yogurt is low-fat and loaded with probiotics and calcium; the bad news is, you’re probably about to dump about half a pound of candy on top of it. Just don’t get too crazy — they do charge by the ounce.

  • Yumilicious

    3800 McKinney Ave. Uptown/Oak Lawn

    214-521-7888

By now we know this new-wave frozen yogurt is healthier for you than ice cream — low-calorie, nonfat, good for your complexion. We've heard all that before, but this new-wave yogurt explosion continues to leave a lasting mark on the face of Dallas. Beyond the novelty of the fro-yo trend, though, there's room to appreciate the yogurt ritual's finer points: a firm pour, a tart plain base, seasonal flavors and late-night Wii on a big television. Yumilicious has it all. It's not the most efficient setup, but they trust you enough to fill your own cup, which counts for plenty these days. On a Friday night, the place could outdraw the Loon — the line stretches out the door, while 'gurters rightly labor over their choice of flavors. You've got your chocolate, your vanilla, but it's the less common tastes that stand out: avocado, taro, coconut and — God willing, come October — pumpkin.
