Arguably the best rooftop bar in town, 7th Haven makes up for in drink prices what it lacks in panache. Always a place to find a good special, the place is dark and smoky. But with a back patio and roof complete with side bar, there's plenty of space for fresh air too. Paintings of Jim Morrison, Lenny Kravitz and Bob Marley adorn the walls, and two big screens stream sports news and entertainment all night. Booth and table seating complement the long bar, manned by a friendly staff, and best of all, Taco Heads taco stand provides great food late nights Wednesday through Saturday on the back deck.

Located on the southeast corner of Denton's Historic Courthouse Square, The Abbey Inn is one of Little D's most popular English pubs. The Abby Underground is no exception, but it does offer a different look and feel thanks to its – hence the name – underground location. Just south of downtown Dallas, Absinthe Lounge is one of several watering hole options. But there's something delightfully sinister about Absinthe. For one, the drink of the same name only recently became legal in the United States, and Absinthe Lounge takes great pride in the way it serves it. There's a whole ritual involved: the pour, melting the sugar, and adding the water from a specialized dispensary that looks, much like the rest of the bar, like it came from 19th century France. The lighting is low and smoky, which may or may not come from the cigars sold behind the bar.

The Across the Street Bar was named for its location on SMU Boulevard on the other side of Central Expressway from Southern Methodist University, and the auto-garage-turned-bar-and-venue does see its fair share of college students. But it also draws folks from the surrounding area. This Upper Greenville no-frills bar, venue and billiards parlor is in a great location that's seen a recent facelift with several new lofts, restaurants and businesses moving into the area. And, like its sister bar, SMU Boulevard Ice House, Across the Street Bar is known for its cheap pitchers of draft beer. The bar regularly features local musicians and acts on its stage, and for more than 15 years the bar has hosted drum jams on Wednesday nights.

Let us be perfectly clear: There’s no such thing as a speakeasy anymore. Alcohol is legal again, and if you didn’t know that, we hope the rock you live under is air-conditioned. When it comes to bars based on speakeasy vibes, though, Akai is the best. To get there, a Musume staff member will guide you into the restaurant kitchen and through a cinderblock passage to the sexy backroom that is Akai. A red dragon hangs from the dark ceiling over red benches lit by warm red lights (akai is the Japanese word for “red”). The cocktails are intricate and beautifully presented. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more New York-style (not really) speakeasy in Dallas.

Owner Austin Rogers can often be found running food, taking orders and sometimes bussing tables at the classy Dallas club. While the two don’t exactly go together, the dance clubs and corporate highrises seem to coexist here. One good example is Allure, a two-story dance club built into a 100-year old building on Elm Street. From the outside, the building looks like a historical landmark, but on the inside it’s a sleek club with a big dance floor and neon laser lights. The big room upstairs, painted all white, is where ?uestlove from The Roots famously DJed a set for a packed house.

When it comes to McKinney Avenue's stretch of Uptown nightlife, it's impossible to miss Avenu Lounge, an expansive nightclub and lounge that prides itself on its delectable martinis, top-notch DJs and VIP service. On the entryway's red carpet, dozens of young, chicly dressed club-hoppers stand anxiously behind a red rope, not a coat in sight in the wintertime. Show up early if you want first crack at the pricey but well-crafted drinks (especially the martinis), although crowds don't populate the spacious dance floor until just before midnight. If you have a reservation, you can take advantage of the club's several VIP, booth and bottle services. If you don't, and if you're female, plan on getting hit on by some of Uptown's many young bachelors, who frequently flock to Avenu's multiple interior bars.

Years ago, Baby Dolls Saloon moved locations and began boasting "The Legend Lives On." The 37-year-old institution backs up the claim with a roster of more than 200 dancers on any given night. The grand staircase opens onto a bar that sits in the center of the club. The main stage is enormous, and off to the side are smaller audience rooms where the waitresses hang out. Although it has its share of regulars, Baby Dolls is one of the more famous strip clubs in Dallas, and you can count on any number of out-of-towners of all stripes to be there enjoying the show.

Back Porch Grill & Tavern claims to be "Grapevine's own slice of Nashville with a splash of Texas flavor." That much seems true the second you walk in the doors and hear the unmistakable twang of Nashville country tunes blaring from the laptop of a DJ dressed in full cowboy garb. But the rest of the bar, with its wood-paneled walls and prairie décor, is very much a caricature of an old Texas saloon. So too is the menu, which is loaded with strong drinks, comfort food dinners and lunch options.
