  • The Amsterdam Bar

    831 Exposition Ave. Fair Park

    214-827-3433

The Amsterdam Bar is by far one of the coolest bars in town. It's set up like a European-style bar, with a heavy German and Belgian beer menu. There is vintage fat-tire bicycle that hangs above the entrance. The huge backyard is perfect to sit out and catch the occasional band on warm summer nights.

  • Autonomous Society Brewpub

    1928 S. Akard St. Oak Cliff/South Dallas

    469-620-3131

This neighborhood brewpub has a big open tap room with tables and a window bar in addition to the main bar facing the taps with a TV overhead. It has a relaxed neighborhood vibe; sorry no green and pink Instagram walls with a bright neon message.
Autonomous offers more than 20 cold pints from a list that is focused on local breweries and independent masters of craft beer — including some from the Weaver himself. Oak Highlands Brewery, Peticolas, Four Bullets, Manhattan Project Beer Company, TUPPS and Community all have beers on offer, with an interactive menu that shows the level of each keg. Sizes vary from 4-ounce tasters (around $2 each) all the way up to 16 ounces (mostly $6.50).

They offer a small menu of bar food like personal pizzas and pretzel bites.

  • Community Beer Company

    3110 Commonwealth Dr. Downtown/Deep Ellum

    214-751-7921

Community Beer Company is one of the original craft breweries in Dallas. Its Mosaic IPA is a pillar in the local beer community, and its brewery just northeast of downtown is an ode to how far the local craft beer scene has come in 10 years. With more than 70,000 square feet of elbow room, this two-story production brewery and biergarten is host to families, friends, birthday parties and plenty of pooches on the weekends. They offer almost two-dozen beers on tap, all their own.

  • Craft & Growler

3601 Parry Ave. Oak Cliff/South Dallas

    214-821-1122

Officially open in November of 2012, Craft & Growler's warm mahogany interior initially seems better suited for a New England setting, although the beer list proves otherwise. The bar's 30 taps cover a diverse selection of craft beers, with a focus on Texas and Dallas-area microbrews. Apart from an incredibly knowledgeable and friendly staff of beer snobs, the cozy bar offers a unique service: You can choose from a wide selection of beer growlers, or bring your own growler and fill it with any of the tap beers to enjoy at home. A haven for beer-lovers of every sort, Craft & Growler is the sort of place that Hemingway would have frequented to finish a novel.

  • The Flying Saucer Draught Emporium

    14999 Montfort Dr. North Dallas

    972-991-7093

Known more for its extensive beer menu than its basic bar grub menu, Flying Saucer has more than a dozen locations, and this one makes good use of an old Colter's Texas BBQ joint. The bar has more than 200 beers to choose from, with a whopping 90-plus beers on draft. While it can be tough to select from the extensive menu, the nubile bar maids dressed in plaid schoolgirl skirts tend to be more than happy to help you whittle down your selection. Because it's located in Addison, Flying Saucer allows smoking indoors, which makes it feel more pub-like than other similar watering holes in Dallas. After 8:30 p.m. the establishment starts checking photo IDs and only admits folks 21 and up. Regulars, known as "beerknurds," can join the "U.F.O. Club," which keeps track of the beers they've tried. Once someone tries all 200 they are eligible for the bar's "Ring of Honor."

  • Four Corners Brewing Co.

    1311 S. Ervay St. Downtown/Deep Ellum

Four Corners Brewing Co. has come a long way since the 5-gallon home brew system it started with an over a decade ago. Its large brewery in The Cedars neighborhood hosts their manufacturing facility and a well-adorned taproom (we love the upside-down lamp installation overhead). It offers one-of-a-kind beers brewed on a smaller experimental seven-beer barrel system behind the taproom. One of the best times to visit is Thursday evenings for lotería, which is sort of like bingo but with fresh craft beer and 20-year-olds (although your nana is more than welcome). Nosh on fried fajita balls and nachos while learning new Spanish words. Their Heart o’ Texas red ale is an Observer staff favorite. Try out the Geeks Who Drink Trivia on Sundays and monthly bike rides for more good fun.

  • Fox and Hound English Pub

    6051 S.W. Loop 820, Suite 322 Fort Worth

    817-423-3600

For the young business and college types, it's an English pub without the grit. Light wood tones and the image of the horse-mounted hunter execute a clean, well-lit interior reminiscent of a traditional pub, but carpeted and much larger. Flat-screens line the walls with larger sets above the bar, broadcasting whatever game suits your fancy. Two rooms off the main space of Fox and Hound, dubbed the Green Room and Burgundy Room, respectively, house pool tables, dartboards and shuffleboard. Sundays feature service industry specials and every Tuesday pints are priced at two dollars.

  • Humperdinks Arlington

    700 Six Flags Dr. Arlington

    817-640-8553

If you find generic bro-bars slightly depressing, Humperdink's may not be for you. Sports bars can be hit-or-miss, but chain sports bars inevitably seem to have a manufactured enthusiasm, as if they're all designed from a blueprint with blank areas that say "Install local sports team banner here." Of course, none of that matters after a few beers. And that's what sets Humperdink's apart – not only is it an all-purpose bar offering food, karaoke and big-screen televisions, but each location also boasts its own brewery, plus a small but well thought-out selection of other craft beers. In fact, the beer is good enough that you may want to get one of the 100-oz. "Beer Towers," a man-sized glass tube with a spigot at the bottom that requires a minimum of three people to order. The beer and the friends may be needed if you're going to brave the karaoke stage.

  • McKinney Avenue Tavern

    2822 Mckinney Ave. Uptown/Oak Lawn

    214-969-1984

When you're looking for a serious sports bar, Big Al & Redneck Steve's McKinney Avenue Tavern has you and your team's number. It's the kind of place where you see several tables filled with folks in sweaty, grass-stained uniforms who just left a baseball diamond or a football field and are ordering pitchers before watching a game. And with flatscreens both inside and on the patio (including a huge 96-inch big screen), no matter where you're seated you'll be sure not to miss a second of the action. The bar always offers $3 PBRs and happy hour runs all night on Tuesdays. The front patio offers regulars a good view of McKinney Avenue for Uptown people-watching and provides a nice, quieter spot when a big game is on inside.

  • The Old Monk

2847 N Henderson Ave. East Dallas & Lakewood

    214-821-1880

The Old Monk opened in 1998 and has been a Dallas staple since. Generations have given this place their days, sipping dark beer through the night, followed by brunch behind big sunglasses in the morning. Their fish and chips are tops in the city. The bar has draft beers from around the world plus 70 bottles to choose from, with a few locals squeezed in. Two sister bars are down the street — The Skellig and Spider Murphy's — if you’re up for a European dark bar walking tour. During the pandemic, they pivoted to a daytime coffee bar to extend hours for employees. They serve coffee from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Peticolas Brewing Co.

    1301 Pace St. Downtown/Deep Ellum

    214-234-7600

Peticolas had been putting its beer in cans for only six months when the pandemic arrived and forced its taproom’s closure. Suddenly those four-packs became the brewery’s lifeline, and loyal customers lined up their cars, bikes and running shoes to pick up curbside beer to go. As grateful as we were to pound Velvet Hammers in our own homes, it’s wonderful that the split-level taproom is finally back open. There’s no better place in town to catch soccer games; Peticolas shows everything from Champions League to regional Mexican matches, and it’s a semi-official home for FC Dallas fans who don’t want to drive to Frisco. If there aren’t any games on, start your own by playing foosball, pingpong or shuffleboard upstairs.

  • Sherlock's Baker St. Pub & Grill

5100 Belt Line Rd. North Dallas

    972-726-6100

If the name didn't clue you in to this bar and grill's all-things-British theme, you'll figure out the second you open the door and see the full-size red telephone booth and the walls, which are bedecked with rugby and cricket memorabilia mixed in with the typical pub design. Because Sherlock's boasts far more easily re-arranged seating than your average pub, it's a great place for large groups-and there's also a large patio. The pub's located in a strip mall in smoke-friendly Addison, so be prepared for a haze. The place can get pretty packed during happy hours and weekends-what with two bars, a full dining menu, nightly live music and popular drink specials like $2 wells and domestic drafts from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and all day on Sunday.

  • Small Brewpub

    333 W. Jefferson Blvd. Oak Cliff/South Dallas

    972-863-1594

This is not your average brewpub, and the changes reach far beyond producing pints of beer that you actually want to drink. Small turns out plates of food that look like they belong in a Stephan Pyles restaurant and then somehow manages to charge you as little as 10 bucks for them. Misti Norris is in the kitchen, and her time at FT33 is evident in plates that involve several components and then several garnishes more. While these plates sometimes get a little crazy, there’s enough beautiful cooking here to warrant experimentation. A great place to start is with any of the pasta dishes. Don’t miss the tagliarini dressed in a buttery sauce and covered with a paper-thin shroud of pancetta. Don’t miss the booze either. The peppercorn pilsner seems destined for awards and the cocktail program provides an elevated take on classic drinks without the fussiness you find at many Dallas cocktail bars.

  • Uptown Bar & Grill

    2523 McKinney Ave. Uptown/Oak Lawn

    214-969-9433

If there’s a dive in Uptown, Uptown Bar & Grill is it. For nearly two decades, the bar has offered cheap drink specials and good burgers to the Uptown set. Neon beer lights cast a campy red hue over the thick tiled floor, on the outskirts of which sit tables where patrons order drinks and pub grub while watching karaoke, one of the bar’s biggest draws. Another big draw in the warmer months is Uptown Bar & Grill’s expansive patio, which offers a good vantage point for watching people or games, the latter of which flicker on outdoor flat-screen televisions.

  • Vector Brewing

9850 Walnut Hill Ln., Suite 405 North Dallas

    469-676-0797

This locally owned spot has a bevy of house-made beers all brewed at their seven-barrel Deutsche brewhouse, which is right behind the bar. Their chef-run kitchen is far better than your average bar food. Be sure to try a pizza with a made their own sourdough starter. They have a great trivia at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays. And while we love kids (or sort of understand that some people have them) their kid curfew is kind of cool: no kids after 8 p.m. Bye-bye baby bye-bye-bye.
