  • Blue Mesa Grill

7700 W. Northwest Highway Park Cities

    214-378-8686

The meal to have at this area favorite is the Mexican breakfast buffet. Families in their post-church Sunday best line up for the omelet bar, and Tex-Mex offerings such as the chicken and mushroom enchiladas with chipotle cream sauce and waffles. The rest of the menu, with as many ingredients locally sourced as possible, is marked by higher-end Mexican and Tex-Mex specialties such as slow-roasted natural chicken with caramelized honey-ancho glaze and the blue-corn-crusted mahi mahi with roasted poblano aioli. Of course, tacos make an appearance, but we're talking beef tenderloin tacos here. The décor follows suit with clean and colorful appointments. Reservations are most definitely recommended.

  • 360 Brunch House

5331 E. Mockingbird Lane Park Cities

    214-964-0871

Start your day off with a flight of mimosas at the neon-pink brunch spot. Try the Flaming Apple Whiskey Cakes, which come with an age restriction: so much booze in the things you have to be 21 or older to order. Thick and fluffly Lemon Poppy pancakes with a housemade lemon sauce, which is more like a curd hit the spot. We also loved the Very Berry French Toast.

  • Barcadia

1917 N. Henderson Ave. East Dallas & Lakewood

    214-600-7027

True to its name, Barcadia is half bar, half arcade, and offers video games from Centipede and Dig Dug to Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat, plus skee-ball ramps and popular bar food. And with 24 draft beers to choose from and ample mixed-drink selections, Barcadia is not far from a Chuck E. Cheese with an adult twist. Not feeling gamey? Have a seat on the bar's spacious front patio, which is great for accommodating large groups of people-just make sure to watch out for falling wooden blocks from the giant Jenga game.

  • Bread Winners Cafe and Bakery

8687 N. Central Expressway Park Cities

    469-232-9798

A friendly and casual bakery-cafe with a French bistro feel shelling out generous portions, Bread Winners is a Dallas Observer favorite. Cakes, pies and pastries are made fresh daily, perfect for those on the go or for noshing on the brick patio. It's difficult not to arrive and find the place packed-especially during brunch, when the flat iron steak and eggs and scrambles are king and queen. That shouldn't stop you. The wait for a table is rarely more than 15 minutes.

  • Buzzbrews

    2801 Commerce Downtown/Deep Ellum

    214-741-2801

Owner Omar Zuniga offers stick-to-your-ribs grub (even the vegetarian options) to a customer base that skews towards the hipster, the scenester and the coffee-loving conversationalist, all of whom are attracted to the classy retro-diner feel and the hearty food. In other words, it's a lively, busy joint, particularly for those who enjoy a free wi-fi hookup with their over-easy eggs. The stuffed crepes and eggs are popular here and include variations such as Hare Krishna (egg whites) and the hearty Bluto, which comes with chorizo, onion, bacon, tomatoes, jalapeño, cilantro, poblano and cheddar. The roll-your-own breakfast burritos are also hits, available in such whimsical names as the Mr. C, which has chorizo. Coffee is self-serve. And the place is always jumping, thanks in part to theme nights like open-mic and trivia nights.

  • Café Brazil

6420 N. Central Expressway East Dallas & Lakewood

    214-691-7791

The original Café Brazil Lakewood location may be lost to history, but its colonies, with eclectic interior designs and attentive staff, live on throughout DFW. There's even a restaurant all the way out in McKinney! It is a well-loved and critically acclaimed local chain that specializes in hearty, inexpensive breakfasts, gourmet roasted coffee from a self-serve station and a smattering of Mexican and Southern-inspired dishes. The chorizo quesadilla, honey-chipotle fish tacos, chicken-fried steak and barbecue salmon are just some of the signature entrées. But it's with breakfast and coffee that Café Brazil really shines. Take, for example, the mammoth Brazilian Breakfast special, the vegetarian migas and house-made crepes. If the self-serve coffee strikes your fancy, there are more than 30 coffees available by the pound for a bit of Café Brazil at home.

Peruse the book-like menu of Cindi's N.Y. Deli and it's possible you could find whatever it is you're craving. Breakfast-wise, the pancakes and French toast are light and fluffy. Want a good poached egg? Cindi's can serve it right up. Patty Sunday: 7:00 am – 9:00 pm melt or giant pastrami sandwich? Yes and yes. The ample menu also boasts many items popular in Jewish cuisine and thus is startlingly successful at bringing the vibe of a real Northern deli straight into this red state. Knish or cake, Cindi's serves quality… and a bit of an attitude (which we totally appreciate and expect from a good deli, thanks).

  • Honey Berry Pancakes and Cafe

4520 Frankford Rd #100a North Dallas

    972-619-3333

Honey Berry Pancakes and Café was founded outside Chicago in 2019. They have a typical brunch menu and hours of operation to match, opening early and closing early. They offer up crepes, waffles, various takes on the Benedict (basic, corned beef, Florence, southwestern, etc.), along with omelets, biscuits and gravy, breakfast sliders, country fried steak, and several different skillets such as veggie and corned beef. Their pancakes, however, are probably what put them on the map, and they offer several versions such as key lime pie, chocolate chip peanut butter, Oreo s’mores, and banana nut. Their signature pancake is called, conveniently enough, the Honeyberry, and is composed of berry mascarpone filling, fresh berries, vanilla crème anglaise and blackberry coulis, and is really good but saying it was sweet would be an understatement.

  • J's Breakfast & Burgers

    14925 Midway Rd. Addison

    972-239-7619

"20 Years and Still Cookin'" pretty much nails J's. It's amazing so many people can eat all that weighty American goodness and live for that long. It must have something to do with the food, cheaper than last night's grease and the "kiss my grits" staff. Operating 'round the clock (making it a good place to sober up with an after-hours breakfast), this diner is replete with green vinyl and parts held together by duct tape. J's has a much-coveted smoking section and the requisite chicken-fried steak, to boot.

  • Jonathon's Forestwood

    5337 Forest Lane North Dallas

In Oak Cliff, Jonathon’s Diner has been a beloved breakfast, brunch and lunch destination since 2011. In fall 2023, this new spot opened at Forest Lane and the North Dallas Tollway. Despite its unassuming exterior, the interior is surprisingly spacious, with seating for approximately 150, both inside and outdoors. The dark sage green walls create a cozy atmosphere, accentuated by the 12 bright orange high-back bar stools encircling the expansive bar area. The menu at Jonathon’s Forestwood remains faithful to the original location, but they’ve introduced some new additions, such as a seared tuna salad, cobb salad, sopapilla waffles and a sandwich that stole the show for us: the Pigg Mac. Jonathon’s biscuits and gravy ($8.50), a must-try, consisted of two pepper biscuits and their famous peppered cream gravy, with four turkey sausage links. Flaky, fresh biscuits and the pepper gravy transformed this classic comfort into a sublime treat. First up, try the Danger Dogs, pancake-battered turkey sausage links served with spicy mustard. With four dogs per order, the batter was light and crispy with a funnel cake kind of texture. Skepticism turned into satisfaction as the spicy mustard surprisingly complemented the sweet pancake batter, resulting in a delightful, Texas State Fair kind of combination. The chicken fried steak and eggs is epic here. The steak is as large as the plate and unlike most crust that fall apart once the gravy hits, here it maintains a crunch even several hours later (leftovers). This is served with two eggs, brunch potatoes and toast; you would be remiss not to try it. The Pigg Mac sandwich comes with spicy pork patty and pepper Jack cheese provided a nice kick, while the citrus slaw and red onions added a refreshing crunch with a zesty twist. The harissa aioli infused a smoky spiciness, while the over-easy egg crowns this jewel of a sandwich with its silky runny yolk.

  • The Original Pancake House

4343 W. NW Highway Northwest Dallas

    214-351-2012

Les Highet and Erma Hueneke founded the first Original Pancake House in Portland, Oregon, in 1953. Since then, the family and its franchisees have exported the beloved restaurant coast to coast. The popular breakfast giants at this everyday eatery are the Apple Pancake, a large pancake with sautéed apples and cinnamon sugar; and the Dutch Baby, a behemoth pancake with lemon, whipped butter and powdered sugar. Of course, there are other popular items, like the rolled mushroom omelet with mushroom sherry sauce, but none dare reach the heights of the stars.

  • Sclafani's New York Bagels and Sandwiches

6135 Luther Lane, Dalals Park Cities

    609-361-3723

Sclafani's has a full menu of breakfast and lunch sandwiches in addition to bagels and schmears. All the sandwiches have New York themes. The Park Avenue comes with smoked salmon, choice of schmear, tomato, onion and capers. The Sinatra comes with just egg and cheese.

The bagels at Scalfani's have a little snap from the exterior and are dense in the middle. Each bite has some bounce to it. These bagels are thick, too. At home it was easy to slice one on the horizontal not once but twice, rendering three "slices" of one bagel. Toasted then slathered in a fatty butter, it was wonderful.

Schmears can be bought in large or small to-go containers. There are both savory and sweet variations from garden veggie to birthday cake. We can vouch for honey walnut, and that it's good enough to eat off a spoon alone, not that we'd do that. We tried a Beastie Boys Burger on a cheddar bagel (even though the NYC rappers are all vegetarian or vegan). The burger had a flame-broiled flavor to it and definitely rose above our burger-at-a-bagel-shop expectations.

    Sclafani's also serves gourmet coffee.

  • Shug's Bagels

    3020 Mockingbird Lane Park Cities

    469-526-5050

Shug's owner, Justin Shugrue, is a Westchester County native who moved to Dallas to attend Southern Methodist University. After getting his finance degree, the career didn't suit him. That coupled with the fact that he not only loved bagels but also worked at bagel bodegas back east led him to open this spot near SMU.

On Saturday mornings the line wraps around the building for these kettle-boiled bagels that are seasoned on both sides. Try the Spicy Shug — bacon, egg and pepperjack cheese with a hash brown and hot sauce on a roll.

Shug’s has seven additional classic sandwiches, including a Reuben, chicken salad bagel, grilled cheese and a pizza bagel. They also offer breakfast sandwiches with a variety of meats and cheeses and have three types of bagels and lox — classic, gravlax and pastrami lox.

The day we visited they offered poppy, salt, whole wheat, onion, sesame, egg, egg everything, everything and plain. But a flavor is gone for the day once it sells out.

Shug's After Dark is a new concept that is open for late-night munchies.

  • Wow! Donuts and Drips

5601 W. Lovers Lane, Suite 130 Park Cities

    469-440-2619

Wow Donuts and Drips is now open on Lovers Lanes, across from the new Odelay Mexican food restaurant and Eatzi's. This is Wow's second location — the flagship in Frisco opened in 2017.

They make from-scratch doughnuts in small batches every few hours and rotate in dozens of new flavors throughout the year. It's more like an event than a doughnut. Wow also has mochi doughnuts, which look like those freezable teething ring for babies. Mochi doughnuts, which are having a moment, give a bit more of a bounce-back with each bite.

Wow offers a simple single glazed doughnut for $1.35, or a vanilla sprinkle for $2.65 all the way up to $4.44 for specialty selections, like a chocolate Bavarian cream. Other high-end concoctions include Fruity Pebbles, Mango Tango and Maple Bacon.

Drips here include a bevy of coffee, lattes, teas; doppios, a Dirty Chai, horchata and hot chocolate. You can attain many levels of sugar and coffee highs.
