  • City Hall Bistro

    1321 Commerce St. Downtown/Deep Ellum

    214-651-3686

When City Hall Bistro first opened, it nearly sank like a rock under the weight of its attempt to capture nearly every trend in the food world. With no head chef at the helm, the Adolphus Hotel’s elegant-casual restaurant tried to be all things to all Instagrammers, with uni, paella, squid ink pasta, Lebanese duck pancakes and a few too many shaved truffles. Then chef Jeramie Robison took command and calmed the waters, paring the menu down to a small selection of simple, cleanly made Mediterranean dishes. The wine list is equally approachable and equally focused on southern European delights. City Hall may not blow anyone away, but it’s a very satisfying restaurant — and, thanks to its location in the far back corner of a hotel lobby, it rarely gets too busy.

Top pick: The farro salad nicely illustrates the kitchen’s ethos of doing things simply but right: Add a creamy feta dressing and some veggies, then toss in crispy roasted chickpeas to make sure the texture isn’t gloopy. The brunch menu is especially good, too — and yes, $16 is a reasonable price for a breakfast sandwich when it’s well-balanced, generously filled with slices of wagyu beef and served alongside a pile of crispy-outside, fluffy-inside potatoes.

The downside: Cooked or candied lemon peels occasionally drop into plates like surprise house guests. Also, the bathroom is quite a long walk back through the hotel lobby bar, and staff like to escort guests because so many diners have gotten lost.

Fun fact: This is more of a hot take than a fun fact, actually, but we’re in the hot take business, so here goes: City Hall Bistro is the best hotel restaurant in downtown Dallas.

  • Constantin's Café

    15404 Midway Rd. Addison

    972-458-2500

The second incarnation of Constantin and Amalia Ispas' Romanian and Mediterranean hospitality, Constanin's follows the long-passed Athenee Café. With the return of the Romanian restaurateurs, the loyal regulars returned for mamaliga (polenta). The dirt-cheap, all-you-can-eat lunch buffet ($6.25) is popular with area workers. The house poultry dish, Chicken Constanin, comprises chicken breast sautéed with fresh mushrooms, white wine, garlic, baby dill, Transylvanian cheese, paprika, sour cream and feta. Stuffed grape leaves, moussaka and schnitzel make appearances on the menu. The Ispases are affable and generous hosts serving a unique yet familiar cuisine, giving them a leg up when it comes to other Mediterranean restaurants. How else to explain the Romanian resurrection in Addison? At least one customer pins it on Borsec, the acclaimed Queen of Mineral Waters. Said customer claims she lost 25 pounds due to consuming that sparkling beverage.

  • Hannah's Off the Square

    111 W. Mulberry St. Denton

    940-566-1110

In a northern city better known for its annual street fair than dining fare, Hannah's Off the Square is a pleasant surprise. The owners have transformed a small corner of a vintage city building into a small piece of Europe near Denton's courthouse square. The quiet atmosphere, brightly colored décor, accented with copper and set off by natural stone walls, is just part of the pleasure of dining in one of the few Denton restaurants that recommends reservations, because it's one of the few that's good enough to need them. Hannah's chefs do a masterful job of preparing gourmet fare unparalleled for many miles around. Entrée highlights are the sesame-seared tuna and steak au poivre.

  • Medieval Times

    2021 N. Stemmons Freeway Downtown/Deep Ellum

    214-761-1801

Since 1992, fully armored knights have thrilled mobs 1,000 strong with a jousting tournament in order to claim the King's Champion prize. The setting here is meant to resemble an 11th century ivy-covered Spanish castle presided over by the court of King Philippe and his daughter Princess Leonore. But its four-course meal, served in its hall of arms, includes a decidedly non-medieval menu of tomato bisque, spare rib and herb-basted potato. A vegetarian option and birthday packages for your little squire are also available. The spectacle continues with various other medieval games, such as the show by the royal falconer, and is completed with the nine-acre, tree-lined grounds complete with a moat filled with live Koi.
