Historic Landmarks in Dallas

The Waxahachie Chautauqua Auditorium, an unusual octagonal 2500-seat open-air auditorium, was built in 1902 to accommodate the throngs of people attending the annual Chautauqua Assemblies. In the mid-1970s, the decaying and almost demolished auditorium was resurrected and restored through the efforts of local citizens and remains today a monument to the Chautauqua history of Waxahachie. It has been awarded a Texas Historical Marker and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the only known original Chautauqua building surviving in Texas. Currently, the Auditorium is used for community events as well as rental for private functions. Regular activities include the annual Chautauqua Festival produced by the Chautauqua Preservation Society (last Saturday in September)and activities of the Waxahachie Community Theater and Old-Fashioned Singers.

Encore Park, an outreach project of The Stewpot and First Presbyterian Church of Dallas, is an innovative revitalization program of an historic, but long-neglected block in downtown Dallas. Work began with the Church’s purchase of 508 Park and adjacent properties in 2011. With the goal of improving the lives of the homeless and improving downtown Dallas, the cultural social campus currently includes Encore Park’s 508 Amphitheater, Sculpture Wall and Community Garden. Fundraising for Phases II and III to complete the interior of 508 Park’s recording and art studios, rooftop, and Museum of Street Culture; add a teaching kitchen to the Community Garden; and renovate 515 Park is underway. Peak’s Addition is the earliest developed portion of East Dallas as well as its oldest residential neighborhood. Some claim it is older than the city of Dallas itself, which was granted a town charter in 1856. Our neighborhood began with the large estate Colonel Jefferson Peak built in 1855 on the corner of Worth and Peak Streets. This house was the first brick house in Dallas. Peak was a major landowner who at one time owned all of the land from Elm to Capital and Carroll to Haskell. Major East Dallas streets still bear Peak’s name and those of his children: Junius, Worth, Victor, and Carroll.
