  • Ariana Cuisine

3607 Greenville Ave. East Dallas & Lakewood

    469-317-7112

Ariana Cuisine is a little spot on Lower Greenville that specializes in Afghan food, though its menu also includes options that it describes as “authentic homestyle cuisine with a variety of halal and Mediterranean dishes.” The selection of mains includes kabobs, burgers, Afghan-style curries and rice dishes. Try the korma sabzi, a lamb curry with beans and spinach served with wonderful basmati rice. The tender chunks of lean lamb lived in a rich tomato-based sauce with spinach, beans and spices that create a lovely mélange of flavors. The beans were an interesting addition that worked surprisingly well. Butter chicken arrived in a rather large bowl along with the rice. The rich tomato and butter sauce was full of braised dark-meat chicken pieces, incredibly aromatic with the right amount of spice.
  • Express Kabob

    1915 N. Central Expressway #200 Plano

    469-298-0189

The kebab combo platter is the smart choice at Express Kabob because it allows the option of Kabuli pulao, a marvelous basmati rice pilaf made with long, super-thin slices of carrot and raisins that seem plumped up practically back into grapes. It’s an aromatic dish, the taste as subtle as the smell is intoxicating, the perfect foil to the savory, peppery force of the meat. There’s a whole side of the menu that doesn’t involve kebabs, too, and it contains many of my favorites. Mantu ($9) are wide, plump Afghan dumplings, each nearly 2 inches across, filled with ground beef and onions and topped with dal nakhut, yellow dal made by splitting chickpeas. The mantu sport a yogurt sauce that fuses garlic and mint together into a funky, uniquely tangy topping. A drizzle of tomato-butter sauce and a showering of parsley complete the picture. Nodding to the portion sizes at Express Kabob, owner Reahim Budri jokes “The Middle Eastern appetite is big." As Plano finds out about his family’s cooking, the city’s appetite for his dishes may grow to match.
  • Laili

    920 S Harwood St. Ste 112 Downtown/Deep Ellum

    214-484-3735

Dallas Farmer's Market has a standout in Laili, a “Silk Road” fusion counter. Its chef-owners are two women from Afghanistan and Turkey, Afifa Nayeb and Nevin Kaya. The menu happily jumps between the two countries’ native cuisines, a roster of home-cooking dishes presented with integrity. Even surrounded by the Farmers Market’s array of stylish macarons and ice cream sandwiches, the desserts at Laili stand out as some of the neighborhood’s best.

  • Nora

1928 Greenville Ave. East Dallas & Lakewood

    214-828-0095

The sleek, modern décor at Nora boasts whitewashed walls accented by a pair of long, dark wooden boards and chandeliers with thin, opaque, tinkling things that illuminate like ice sculptures from above. Middle-aged couples sit at the bar sipping wine, while larger groups fill out the dining tables and more tables spill onto the patio out front filled with Greenville Avenue residents who have grown bored with the neighborhood's other offerings. Matt Pikar, who is also the chef and owner of the Afghan Grill, offers comparable cuisine at his second restaurant. Leek and meat dumplings and pumpkin topped with yogurt and meat sauce join a host of kebabs and curry that are perfect for diners who are new to Afghan flavors.
